Shrines of Spain

Day 1
Depart for Spain

Today we depart on our overnight transatlantic flight to Spain, beginning our pilgrimage through the sacred and historic heart of the Iberian Peninsula. As we journey toward Barcelona, enjoy onboard meals and prepare spiritually for the days of prayer, discovery, and fellowship ahead.

Day 2
Arrival in Barcelona

Welcome to Spain! Upon arrival in Barcelona, we are greeted by our tour escort and transferred to our hotel. After check-in, there will be time to rest and refresh following our international journey. This evening, we gather together for our welcome Mass and festive dinner featuring regional Catalan cuisine. Overnight in Barcelona.

Barcelona

Day 3
Barcelona – Manresa – Montserrat

Following breakfast, we begin our exploration of the vibrant city of Barcelona. Our panoramic tour includes Montjuïc Hill, Plaza de España, Plaza de Catalunya, and views of the historic waterfront. We continue into the Gothic Quarter, walking through narrow medieval streets rich with Christian history, and visit the magnificent Cathedral of Barcelona.

Next, we journey to the elegant Eixample district to visit Antoni Gaudí’s masterpiece, the Basilica of the Sagrada Família, one of the most extraordinary churches in the world. Here we admire its breathtaking architecture and profound Christian symbolism.

In the afternoon, we travel to Manresa, where St. Ignatius of Loyola spent nearly a year in prayer and discernment following his conversion. We visit the Sanctuary of Saint Ignatius and the Holy Cave where he wrote parts of the Spiritual Exercises. Continuing through the dramatic mountain landscape, we arrive at Montserrat, home of the beloved Black Madonna of Catalonia. Dinner and overnight in Montserrat.

Montserrat

Day 4
Montserrat

This morning we celebrate Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat, one of Spain’s most treasured Marian sanctuaries. Perched high among the rugged mountains, the Benedictine monastery has welcomed pilgrims for centuries. We venerate the miraculous statue of La Moreneta, the Black Madonna, patroness of Catalonia.

According to tradition, shepherd children discovered the statue in a cave in the ninth century after witnessing mysterious lights and hearing heavenly music. Attempts to move the statue failed, which was interpreted as Our Lady’s desire to remain on the mountain. Since then, Montserrat has become a place of deep prayer and devotion. Time will be provided for personal prayer, quiet reflection, and enjoying the spectacular mountain scenery. Dinner and overnight in Montserrat.

Montserrat

Day 5
Montserrat – Zaragoza – Madrid

After breakfast, we depart for Zaragoza, one of the great Marian cities of Spain. Here we visit the magnificent Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, built on the site where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. James the Greater in A.D. 44 while he was evangelizing Spain. Discouraged by the difficulties of his mission, St. James received encouragement directly from Our Lady, who appeared atop a pillar carried by angels.

Inside the Basilica we venerate the sacred pillar and celebrate Mass. We also visit nearby La Seo Cathedral, renowned for its remarkable blend of Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. Following free time for lunch and a stroll through Zaragoza’s historic center, we continue to Madrid. Dinner and overnight in Madrid.

Madrid

DAY 6
Madrid – Toledo – Madrid

Following breakfast, we begin our guided tour of Spain’s capital city. Highlights include the Plaza Mayor, elegant boulevards, and views of the Royal Palace, official residence of the Spanish monarchy.

Later we journey to the ancient city of Toledo, beautifully situated above the Tagus River. Known as the “City of Three Cultures,” Toledo was for centuries home to Christians, Jews, and Muslims living side by side, leaving behind an extraordinary artistic and spiritual heritage. During our visit we explore the winding medieval streets and admire landmarks such as the Church of Santo Tomé, the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, and the historic city gates. We celebrate Mass before returning to Madrid for dinner and overnight.

Madrid

DAY 7
Madrid – Astorga – O Cebreiro – Santiago de Compostela

Today we travel northwest across the Spanish countryside toward Galicia and the sacred destination of Santiago de Compostela. Along the way we stop in Astorga, where we admire the Episcopal Palace designed by Antoni Gaudí, now home to the Camino Museum.

Continuing into the mountainous landscapes of Galicia, we arrive at O Cebreiro, one of the most iconic villages along the Camino de Santiago. This ancient pilgrim stop is known for its traditional stone houses and the Eucharistic Miracle that occurred here in the fourteenth century. We visit the sanctuary associated with this miracle and have time for prayer and reflection.

By evening we arrive in Santiago de Compostela, one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Christianity. Dinner and overnight in Santiago.

Santiago

DAY 8
Santiago de Compostela

This morning we experience a portion of the Camino de Santiago on foot, walking through the peaceful Galician countryside among eucalyptus groves and scenic landscapes once traveled by countless pilgrims throughout the centuries.

Later we participate in the International Pilgrim Mass at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the relics of St. James the Apostle are venerated. Following Mass, we visit the magnificent cathedral, a masterpiece of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture. Pilgrims traditionally embrace the statue of St. James and descend into the crypt housing his sacred relics.

Our guided tour of Santiago includes Obradoiro Square, Gelmírez Palace, Fonseca Palace, and the charming streets of the historic center. The remainder of the afternoon is free for prayer, shopping, or personal exploration before gathering for our farewell dinner. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela.
